Our Boy’s Bedroom Plan and Inspiration {aka the story of the most dragged out room revamp ever}
Last week you may have seen my post about 45 Ways to Add Character and Personality to a Boy’s Bedroom. I have been collecting ideas for quite a while now as well as keeping my eyes open at thrift stores and garage sales for things that fit with the plans.
But that is pretty much all I have been doing. Collecting ideas. Thinking about it. Planning. Collecting a few thrifted items. And not really DOING much else.
So I would say it is about time for some serious DOING.
And nothing spurs on a little housie inspiration like a pretty little inspiration board, am I right?
Last summer I toyed with the idea of putting our boys into the same bedroom in order to free up some space on our main floor for a family craft room and project space. Well, we obviously went ahead with that idea and the boys have been bunked together for several months now.
Here is the rather unfinished and very messy space before we moved the boys together – at this time only our oldest son slept in this bedroom. The Mario decorations are in fact left-over decorations from his fifth birthday party. We were going for the classy construction paper look.
In the summer (yes, you read that correctly… over half a year ago) we moved the boys into the same bedroom. For a LOOOONG while we didn’t even have a ‘big boy bed’ for our youngest son- he was out of his crib and we hastily sold it at our garage sale before we had any sort of plan to replace it. Oh well, he preferred climbing out of it to sleeping in it anyhow. Needless to say that left him sleeping on a mattress on the floor.
It was summer. We pretended he was camping.
But then September came around and camping season was coming to an end so we had to do something. Thankfully my dear father swooped in and built our youngest a bed for his 3rd birthday gift. The cutest little bed that matches his brothers. Do I have a great Dad or what?!? (oh, and I have a great father-in-law too…)
But besides the bed, not a whole lot else was happening. The epic saga of the longest room redo in the history of all little boy room redo’s continued.
I know, I know – “home isn’t built in a day – enjoy the journey” and all that… but I have really let this room revamp drag on waaaaay toooooo looooong. If I don’t light a fire under myself soon I am afraid the boys will be packing for college before their room is finished.
And on that note, here’s the plan:
1) The Walls- I plan to panel one feature wall with horizontal planks like here and then paint the whole room white and add stripes to the other three walls sort of like here.
2) We will arrange the beds somewhat close together like this, and back them onto the planked wall. We will DIY some book display shelves like these for above each bed and I would love to try to add some kind of light fixture above each bed (hard-wiring in a fixture isn’t likely but in my dreams it would look like these lights from here). While the bedding will be in stripes and plaids I plan to use red accents for our oldest son’s side and yellow accents for our youngest son’s side (by DIYing some pillows in the chevron fabric shown above). I already painted a striped nightstand using some DIY chalk paint last summer so we will use that as the nightstand between their beds.
3) I found an amazing deal on a garage sale dresser last summer and am going to revamp it using some Country Chic Chalk Paint– the plan is to do a flag design like the one from here but instead of a Union Jack I think I will do the flag of Iceland (where our heritage originates).
4) We already bought these blackout curtains from here but I need to shorten them and then want to create a curtain rod using galvanized pipe like the one shown here.
5) In the closet I hope to put one some faux map wallpaper like the stuff shown here and include some chalkboard painted walls as well like the ones shown here.
6) I want to DIY some knockoff accessories like some paddle décor, a brother’s pallet sign, and a growth chart – all from here.
7) We have a bookcase that we will be using the room and I have been collecting some thrifted accessories for it – but also want to make or buy crates like the ones here to store some of their books in as well (we have a LOT of kids books).
So, that’s the plan. What do you think? I think you need to wish me luck and send me some serious energy vibes so I can get moving on this space. Please:)
Thanks for reading. And remember my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey.

Hi Gretchen! Wow- four boys must keep you very busy. I know two has me hopping some days… I can’t wait to see it come together too- and our oldest son is cutely opinionated about the whole process:) Thanks for coming by!!
Tee hee I love the “it’s summer we pretend he’s camping” line. That is so something I would say/think. 🙂 I am working on the longest girls room redo, we can be “dragged out room revamp” twins. 🙂
Lol- I don’t know why I have been dragging it out so long… getting distracted by other projects I suppose. Glad I am not the only one!!
Good luck Krista, can’t wait to see the room come together!
Thanks Diana- I am setting a goal to get it finished up before our spring break (I will need the luck!). Have a great weekend:)
Love it! I can’t wait to see it all come together.
Thanks Megan! I can’t wait too:) I hope to tackle a lot of stuff this weekend. Hope you enjoy yours!
Ugh! Boy rooms! I still don’t know what I am going to do with my little man’s room! I like the idea of doing a different flag than the Union Jack.
Hi Heather! It was actually my father-in-law’s idea- I was looking at the UJ dresser and he suggested I do something a little more relevant to our family. I love the idea! Thanks for your visit- have a great weekend:)
The room is going to be AMAZING!!! You are definitely on the right track Krista! I really love the red, blue and yellow combo! So fun!
Thanks Christine- I am pretty excited about it all coming together. I think the boys will love it – and it will be my first time painting a room white – a new experiment!
