Our Kitchen: THE Before

If you have been following along for a while, or follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you may know that we are currently undertaking a major kitchen renovation. A brand new white kitchen that I can’t wait to share all my plans for…. But at first glance, you may think “but you have a white kitchen?!?”. Well, today I want to show you our kitchen: BEFORE. Our Kitchen Before at The Happy Housie-1 I invite you to come in a little closer… Our Kitchen Before at The Happy Housie-3 To see some of the details…. like how all the melamine has detached and is bubbling off the cabinets. It is hard to tell in the picture, but in real life there is a visible bubble underneath the melamine and you can feel the space between the melamine and the MDF door. Our Kitchen Before at The Happy Housie-8 There are other deep down issues…. like the way the melamine has started peeling and chipping off on nearly all the lower cabinets and drawers. Our Kitchen Before at The Happy Housie-7   Our Kitchen Before at The Happy Housie-6 And yucky bits…. like how things haven’t been sealed properly around our sink and there are holes and splits and burns on the countertop. Our Kitchen Before at The Happy Housie-12 We moved in three and a bit years ago and we’ve been holding these cabinets together with a little glue. And then a lot of glue. The pantry had great rolling shelves that no longer roll. The shelves are coming right off the walls of the pantry. We thought about just peeling the melamine and repainting…but after living with it and thinking and mulling it over we decided to start over. From scratch. But the kitchen has many good points as well. Like the fact that it is filled with light from a big skylight. And we love the new tile floors that the previous homeowners had installed even UNDER all the cabinets. Brilliant, weren’t they?! Our Kitchen Before at The Happy Housie-10 And the great view…we would love to see a little more of that. Our Kitchen Before at The Happy Housie-13 Why someone ever put cabinets on this wall instead of all windows, I’m not sure?!? Our Kitchen Before at The Happy Housie-4 And then there is that huge waste of space where the door to the deck is. Our Kitchen Before at The Happy Housie-14 Why wouldn’t you put the door in the dining room? That would give so much more space for cabinets in the kitchen instead of leaving that huge void area… That will be changing. As will pretty much everything else… So here we are now: 10661990_10153384098896002_6098266853210504536_o 10580756_10153384099331002_7013658868252446361_o   Oh, and this isn’t all DIY. We have a contractor doing the structural stuff: windows and doors. And we have an electrician, a plumber, a gas line installer, etc. But don’t worry. There will be lots of DIY once all these big jobs are done. I can’t wait to show you some more {and share our plans!!}.

Thanks for reading. And remember my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey!

  1. That is the nicest makeover that is “realistic” for the normal home. It is so usable. Great use of space and the views just top it off. It is LOVELY, it says come in and cook something yummy….. GREAT JOB

  2. Oh my gosh, that view is to die for! I love that you’re putting in so many windows, how can you not, right? I can’t wait to see the space afterwards, what bright and light awesomeness it will be!

  3. Go for it! We recently (a year ago ish) extended our kitchen then worked our way through the house refurbing. It was hard work living in the mess (my early posers describe it!) plus making all those decisions about where everything needs to go but the results are so worth it! I uploaded these before and after pics in the new year but things have moved on since then.http://pebbledashedpad.wordpress.com/2014/01/17/before-and-where-we-are-now/

  4. I feel like I’m reading my own story… except for the reno part. We haven’t gotten there yet. We’re still at the holding the cabinets together with glue and prayers and dreaming of the day we get a bigger window and no door stage. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you!

  5. krista this is very hard to live with and i am glad you haven’t pulled your hair out yet ha ha but it is going to so awesome can’t wait xx
