Simple DIY Hexagon Serving Tray
Today I can’t wait to share a simple quick DIY hexagon serving tray project. I love all the pretty hexagon shapes I have been seeing lately in design; they remind me of vintage quilts. I really wanted to make something using hexagons, and this little serving tray is what I came up with…
I started with a pale purple-ish tray from Dollarama – the colour doesn’t look too bad in the picture below but in real life it was quite a sickly tone. I gave it a few coats of plastic-friendly white spray paint…
Next I printed off a hexagon shape….
And used this to trace hexagons onto some scrapbook paper…
If you fold your paper over you can cut a few out at the same time…
Then a little Mod Podge…
I just sort of built the pattern as I went…. adding here and there and mixing up the paper in a design I liked.
Then once I had all the pieces that I wanted I painted a few coats of Mod Podge over top of the whole thing (allowing for dry time in between coats)
Perfect for enjoying our last few weeks of summer. We don’t go back to school here until the day after Labour Day – so I plan to milk every last relaxing moment at home that I can out of this summer!
Although I have it set up for summer… I think you could use the same method and do something for fall – or maybe even Halloween! What do you think?? Are your wheels turning?
Have you tried anything hexagon lately? What craft projects have you been up to?
Thanks for reading. And remember my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey.

Thank you so much Heather! I am soooo thrilled and honoured that you featured my little tray!!
So cute!
Thank you!!
Your projects are super cute as always Krista – I wonder how you get the inspiration!! Love it!
Thank you Vel!
Hi Krista. Your tray is adorable and I love hexagons too! The are all the rage right now. I saw you cutting them all out and wanted to let you know I sell Stampin’ Up! and we have a hexagon punch that would make it so much easier for you! Here’s the link in case you are interested: http://www.stampinup.com/ECWeb/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=130919&dbwsdemoid=2054120. Have a great day! – Jenny
A punch would have definitely sped up this process, and given me perfect hexagons rather then lopsided ones like I cut!! LOL!
I love this. I need a few ore fun trays around my house … such a great idea to find a cheap one and spray paint it. I need to think of spray paint more often. 🙂 So cute!
Hi Laura!
I used to be so nervous to use spray paint because of some serious drip catastrophes… but with much practice it has become my new favourite DIY tool! So fast and satisfying to use:)
That tray is so cute, and wow! I love the view from your balcony. laurie
Thanks Laurie- the view is much better then the tray, even if the tray is cute:) lol
This is super super cute! How fun! I would LOVE to have you share this and anything else at my link party that’s still going on! Following via facebook!

Thank you so much for the personal invite Katie!
I love this! It’s so cute. I’ve really got to find a dollar store. The tray would be perfect for my newly painted beachy colored coffee table. I need a tray – versus the serving platter I currently use – to corral the remotes and coasters!
Oooh… your coffee table sounds lovely. I love having a tray on my tables to corral things… this tray is now being used in my kitchen to corral a breakfast shake center….
It’s so cute! (I’m loving the hexagon design!)
Thank you! Cute is a good word for it:)
Love this cute tray, Krista! And I have tons of scrapbook paper lying around just waiting to be put to good use 🙂
Hi Lora! I have so much scrapbook paper and have been switching to digital albums… so I think I may have a lifetime supply of paper on my hands!!
The tray is great Krista! I really need to start using spray paint too!!! Enjoy the rest of the summer 🙂
Yes Christine – spray paint is my new favourite DIY tool. I used to be so nervous about it and had some bad experiences but have been practicing and perfecting my technique and now I LOVE it!
This is super adorable! I love hexie quilting and Mod Podge, so this project really appeals to me!
I wish I could actually quilt with hexies – will have to content myself with paper and Mod Podge I guess:)
How cute and creative! And I can’t get over that view! So pretty =)
Hi Kelly!! I guess you don’t really need a cute tray with a view like that… but it was fun to make anyhow:) I am using it in my kitchen now to coralle our shake station gear…
I love it! Hexagons are so fun!
I need to find a new place to use some Hexagons now I think! Thanks for your visit and comments!!
Lovely, Krista. I love hexi motifs. I have been stitching them a lot lately into pillow covers and bags. So simple, yet graphic. Enjoy these last few weeks – Labour Day approaches!
Hi Bronwyn! I am not the talented quilter and sewer that you are so I guess my hexagons will be limited to paper and Mod Podge for now:)
Krista, what a cutie-pie tray! I just love all your DIY! And then go and through a hexagon pattern in and … well, I’m even more smitten.
Thanks for all the awesome inspiration. All the time.
Cheers to you and yours!
Thanks Therese! I could see something like this in a teen or tween girls room as a jewelry coraller…
What a cute idea, I love it. Thanks for the tutorial. Thanks also for linking to Inspire Me. Hugs, marty
Thank you Marty! And thank you for hosting your fabulous party each week!
I love this tray, Krista! You’re so clever, I always love your ideas and projects. Yet another thing I’m pinning from you! Sharon

This is so pretty. I love the overall design, pattern and colors. LOVE IT ALL!
Thanks so much for sharing at this week’s Project Inspire{d} ~ pinning.
Hugs,
Mary Beth
Thank you Mary Beth! And thank you for pinning!! Yay!
Love the hexagon shape and the way you use color, and the way you use negative space really gives the design pizzazz. Beautiful result Krista. Love the old quilt look with a fresh twist. You’ve got me thinking Christmas already.
Thank you! Hexagons really have such character:)
Krista, I love this tray and your design! You’re right, this could be made for Halloween, Christmas….love this inspiration! Isn’t scrapbook paper and Mod Podge just the best? Thanks so much for sharing, pinning and hope your Monday is happy!
Thank you Cindy! I think the design could be quite versatile – and you are right, I don’t know what I would do without scrapbook paper and Mod Podge!!
