Simple Fall Porch & Deck Decor Ideas

Today I’m sharing our front porch and deck at the cabin along with some simple ideas for adding a fall feel to your outdoor spaces.

When we were first preparing to move to the cabin, I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to do any fall decor this year, either inside or out.  But as we got settled in and fall arrived I began to crave certain essential decor elements that help me happily transition from summer to fall.

I tend to leave summer behind with a little bit of kicking and screaming, but the appearance of the bright yellow mums and pumpkins at the grocery stores always cheers me up a bit.  They remind me of those beautiful, crisp, clear fall days where the sky is as blue as summer but the air is cool enough that you can wear cozy sweaters and boots again.  Those perfect fall days spent watching soccer, reveling in the fall leaves on your crisp afternoon walk, and then cozying up under a blanket on the deck in the sunshine and soaking in the fresh fall air.

Adding  a few simple seasonal decor touches to the front porch and deck has definitely helped me enjoy our outdoor space despite transitioning away from our lazy summer days into our busy fall schedules once again.  Today I’m excited to share our outdoor space at the cabin and how I’ve added just a few simple fall touches to help it transition between the seasons this year…

The key ingredients are always the same for me…

  1. A fall doormat.  I love a layered doormat look with a larger mat anchoring a small, seasonal jute doormat.  This year I couldn’t find any fall doormats in my usual stores (maybe COVID shipping related?), so I ordered this one from Ikea!
  2. Pumpkins and gourds. I always pick mine up at our local farmer’s market, and love to look for different colours.  We never have heritage colour pumpkins in our neck’-‘the woods but I actually enjoy the bright orange classic pumpkins mixed with green gourds and the little white boo pumpkins.  Fall feels like a vibrant season to me, with the colours of the changing leaves pitched against the bright blue sky, and I love how the pumpkins and Mums reflect that vibrancy.
  3. Mums. I know they are cliche, and some years I create more elaborate fall planters, but this year I wanted to keep things simple and picked up a few pre-done pots full of Mums.  It was all I needed to extend the life of my summer ferns by adding in some fall florals.  The vibrant colours are always so cheery to come home to.
  4. Cozy touches.  Add in some blankets, pillows, and cozy elements to encourage yourself to enjoy your time outdoors in the early days of fall.

  1. I love how you’ve gotten the extra mileage out of your summer blue scheme. I too, am a “bluecaholic” and think the oranges, gold, and yellows of fall are the perfect compliment to extend the seasons. And that lakeside view is fantastic!
