Snowball Effect in the Entry Hall: A Sisal Rope Chalkboard and Free-Now-Fresh-Mint Chair…

Here are two DIY projects that I am sharing with you, for some easy inspiration.

Today I have two fun DIY projects to share with you:  a little chalkboard frame changeup with the addition of some sisal rope edging and a guest post over at the DIY Dreamer where I am sharing my latest DIY chalk paint venture on a FREE-now-fresh-Mint chair… Nature canvases on gallery wall in entry hall.

I picked up this chalkboard for $0.50 at a local thrift store recently and it originally had a red/yellow/ green/blue frame. I first painted it out pale yellow, as you may have seen in the entry hall a few weeks back:

Now for… the Snowball Effect.

If you have a keen eye you may notice that more then just the chalkboard has changed… that’s kinda the way we roll round here. I picked up a new lampshade and gorgeous honeycomb vase on major clearance at Target ($5 and $7 respectively!) and there the snowball began. Next I filled the vase with driftwood and added the table runner to blend with the new lampshade. Then I had to switch out the striped chair with this little number all dressed up in some fresh mint. I also painted a few accessories with my newest love: Krylon’s Bahama Sea spray paint. I love this bright colour so much that I sent my husband to the store to buy out the entire stock of it (okay, so there were only two cans left). You will be seeing a lot more of this fantastic shade around here in the next few weeks…

Anyhoo, with all these pretty blue changes I wasn’t really digging the yellow chalkboard frame so I decided to change it up by adding a little sisal rope edging to the face of it. It was super quick and easy, all you need is a hot glue gun, a pair of scissors, and some sisal rope (I bought mine in a 50 ft roll at Walmart in the hardware/rope section).Sissal rope and a hot glue gun.

For your reference, I ended up painting the frame out white after adding my sisal rope: my advice to you would be to start with a white frame to begin with, then add the rope edging. Just makes things that much easier.

To add the sisal rope, I simply added a section of hot glue and pressed the rope onto the frame on the glue. Hold a few seconds and proceed.

Using the hot glue gun to glue the rope onto the frame.

The rope on the frame.

I did two rows of the rope to cover the entire face of the frame.. you may need to do more if your frame is thicker. To finish it off I cut the rope and glued it snugly together in the corner. Once the rope was on, I realized that it looked terrible against the original yellow of the frame so I painted the inside and outside edges with white craft paint (as I mentioned above, you may wish to do this step first instead).

Done!

I think it looks fresh and cute and love the way the texture of the rope adds so much dimension to the entry table vignette…

A quick and easy summery feeling project that, combined with my other changes in the entry hall, makes me feel like I am finally content with that space. Something about it just wasn’t jiving for me… and now I am liking all the blues and greens. I even moved the “Fresh Fish” reclaimed wood sign down to the basement and replaced it with our wicker mirror. I love the overall feel of that space now…finally! What do you think? Do you like it better?

Do you have a room in your house that just isn’t “jiving” for you? Any changes you plan to make soon? I would love for you to hop over to the DIY Dreamer as well!! And thanks so much to Christine for having me over there!

Thanks for reading. And remember my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey.

    1. Hi Amie, I bought it at a local hardware store that sells interesting things for the home as well. Sorry that I don’t have a more readily available source- but you might try Etsy? Good luck with your search!

  1. Soooooooooooo glad I found you, your gallery wall is my favorite of what I’ve seen! Nice to find another Canadian crafting blogger as well! Will follow your projects from here on in….they are wonderful!

    1. Hi Debbie! The color on the walls in the hallway is called Colorado Gray by Benjamin Moore. It is a (beautiful, I think) greeny-bluey-greyish tone… I love the way it pops against the white board and batten (which is Cloud White by Benjamin Moore as well). Hope that helps!

  2. Hi Krista, I sure am seeing more and more of your work and really enjoy what you do. Your entry way is so cheerful and the colours are fabulous. I personally love the touch of red!

Great job from your new follower 🙂

    1. Hi Crystal! I am glad you said that about the red…we used to have a ton of red in our house and have slowly moved into a blue/green scheme but there is still the odd hit of it. I think a little bit here and there works:) So glad you came by and thank you so much for your super kind comments!!

    1. Thanks Shelly! Our entryway is one of my favourite rooms to change-up, but I am pretty happy with it now. I think it might actually stay this way for a while:) So glad you came over!!

    1. Hi Gail!! By snowball effect I meant that once you make one change it can grow and grow into other changes… kind of like a snowball rolling down a hill gathers snow and gets bigger. Maybe it is a Canadian saying? Lol! Thanks for your sweet comments!!

  3. Love your chalkboard, i am currently making one for the first time using an old picture frame and adding a back onto it, so far so good, yours is cute 🙂

    1. Thank you Sarah! I think the rope really adds a ton of dimension and makes it look much better – hard to portray that in the pictures!! Thank you for your kind comments:)

    1. Hi Christy!
I am loving the honeycomb vase too… saw it when it was $25 and was sooooooooo excited to get it for $7.49 on clearance!! Thanks so much for coming by!

  4. I could spend hours on your blog looking at all your projects, you inspire me so much. I run out of ink in my printer trying to get all the projects printed out so I don’t forget.
Love your foyer, lucky gal having one. Everything is so great how you’ve arranged the goodies on the wall too. Your black board is going to be replicated as well as I can depending on frame I use for it. Hubs just cut some thin plywood for me so I could make some different styled blackboards.
What color is that on your walls? I must find it so I can paint some room in our house that color. I love it so much. Been crazy for coral and aquas this year, especially this summer. It gets pretty cold here in winter so the aqua would be cheerful on walls to look at besides white or beige. Little by little I’ve been changing things in living room and our room to aquas with the coral. So pretty and happy looking. If you can would you let me know what paint you used please? reply to: FurryKidzPaperworx@gmail.com

    1. Hi Jane Ellen! It is called Colorado Gray by Benjamin Moore… it is a soft blue/green/grey tone. I love it too!! Thanks for your super kind comments, they made my day!

    1. Thanks Kelly! The home sign was there before but was black so it blended in with the chalkboard… I spray painted it with my new favourite colour – Bahama Sea. I will be sharing a little more about that new love really soon!!

  5. Like you, sometimes I look at a room and I can just feel that something isn’t right. I love it when a quick (and cheap!) change makes all the difference! 🙂

    1. I agree Kim… sometimes something just doesn’t quite jive. I am loving how calm and fresh the room feels now; think it is finally “done”, if that is possible!!

    1. Absolutely Bronwyn! Project time in the morning, then relaxing and playing with my boys at the lake in the afternoon. Loving it!!

  6. Krista, our projects always catch my eye – I saw this over at the Give Me the Goods link party and of course it was you. 🙂 I love sisal projects and this one is so cute and charming. Have a great week! Sharon

    1. Thanks Sarah! When I bought the mint paint I totally did not expect to love it as much as I do. It is almost white but not… so fresh and bright feeling but totally subtle at the same time. I think I see some more mint in my future:)

  7. I love your new sign Krista; is very pretty and welcoming too, the addition of the sisal rope is a great idea! 🙂 & yes I am loving the blues in your entrance with your new lampshade and some driftwood too 🙂 & so happy that you were a guest over at Christine, just visited your post about paint recipe and really loved how you transformed the free chair! 🙂
wish you a beautiful week too!

  8. Love the drift wood. I am a branch girl too and have them in almost every room, to which my hubs has been know to say, “Why do we have trees growing inside our house?” Decor, silly!

  9. LOVE the wall color, can you tell me what color that is? I’m searching for a new bathroom color and that would be perfect.

  10. I totally spotted the frame when you sent me the photo of the entry way!! LOVE IT!! I have a similar yellow chalkboard that I created from a puzzle board. I’m going to find some rope and replicate what you made. LOVE how it turned out!!

    1. Hi Christine! Thanks so much… I like the chalkboard much better now with the rope frame. Actually, liking the whole entry hall that much more. Thanks again for having me over to post at the diy dreamer!! It was so fun:)
      Krista

  11. Looking at your before and after photos – I see what you mean! The little chair on an angle with the jug on it looks better, and the lamp adds a pop of colour, and the reconfiguration of the wall hangings look somehow better. Very pretty and welcoming. I know all about the snowball effect… (Pity my “snowball” wasn’t rolling faster!!!) =)

    1. Hi Petra! I am loving it much more… it feels more calm and cohesive. It may just snowball itself into other rooms around …. you never know:) Some snowballs just take a little longer to gather speed!
