Tween Boy Adventure Bedroom Inspiration Board, Plans, & Progress

Today I’m sharing a Tween Boy Adventure Bedroom inspiration board and plans for our son’s bedroom makeover as well as the progress that we’ve made on this project over the last week as part of the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge.

I can’t believe an entire week has passed since I posted about the start of Finn’s bedroom makeover project. If you read my post last week, then you know that I’m taking part in a 4 week challenge hosted by my friend Stephanie from Casa Watkins Living, to give one room in my home a new look.  I’ve chosen to focus on the last untouched room on our main floor, my youngest son Finn’s bedroom.

Room Refresh

I absolutely love challenges like the New Year New Room Refresh because they motivate me to tackle projects that have been on my list for a long time and to actually get them DONE.  I work best under a bit of pressure, so the four week timeline of this challenge is perfect! Otherwise I spend way too long thinking about things instead of just making decisions and jumping into action.

Add a bit of time-pressure, and I’m thrilled to say that I had a super productive week! I’ve decided on the tween room design, ordered most of the things for the room, as well as started painting. I’m really excited about the design for Finn’s “tween boy modern adventure bedroom”…

Do you remember the before pictures that I shared last week?

Here is the bedroom we started with… A before picture of the bedroom. Dark colored walls and a white bed. The closet doors are open revealing a chest of drawers and sports items. The walls are covered with pictures and a chess board is on a stand. I got started this weekend on packing up the bedroom and purged a ton of clothes and random little bits of toys and junk that Finn has collected over the past year.  It’s crazy how much they horde! I managed to get him down from two dressers to just the tall one in his closet. Turns out that a lot of his clothes were things he had outgrown or things that he never wears. A pile of clothes in the middle of the room. Purging items on the floor. Next, I started painting and I’m nearly finished – if you follow me on Instagram you may have seen me sharing about ALL the painting over the past couple of days… pics I’ve also been working on my Inspiration Board and design plans for this space.

The plans for giving this room a complete refresh…

  • paint most of the walls and all the trim white
  • paint the wall behind the bed Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore
  • replace the tall bed frame with a lower platform bed and a custom live edge headboard
  • move the wooden bookcases to the basement and replace them with two grey ladder style shelves, which will sit on each side of the bed
  • find a new, modern style rug that will ground the bed (probably a 5×8 size)
  • order and hang some fun mountain bike themed art
  • select some new bedding to work with the grey/blue/green colour scheme
  • potentially order a narrow console table to use as a desk on the wall at the end of the bed

So far…

I’ve ordered this rug from Mohawk HomeA patterned rug in blues and greys. And I’m loving these curtains from RoosteryBlue curtains in the room. As well as this pretty and subtle grey duvet cover set from RoosteryA grey bed spread. And this Call of the Mountains lumbar pillow, also from RoosteryMountain inspired sham for the pillow. I also ordered some Mountain Bike Art prints through this great shop on Etsy

I plan to frame them in these Ikea Ribba framesA white picture frame. I also ordered Finn a new platform bed frame so that his bed will set much lower in the room… A bed frame for the room. And our talented friend built us a beautiful live edge cedar headboard (already! he works so fast!)… pic And I ordered two of these Ladder Bookcases, one for each side of his bed… A ladder shelf for the tween bedroom. I’m also considering ordering a console table that is quite narrow and that he could use as a small desk.  I’m waiting until we get the platform bed frame in place to see how much room it feels like we have.  I don’t want to overcrowd the small bedroom space. Minimalist desk. I’ll have to address the closet, as well.  We plan to remove his closet doors and make it neat and tidy inside, so that he can more easily access his dresser and storage. All of my New Year New Room Challenge friends are sharing their week two details today as well!  Be sure to pop by their posts to see what they’ve got in store for their room refreshes… Blogger poster.
