Mulled Wine

Delicious warm mulled wine is the perfect hygge drink for winter and holiday evenings. 


  • 1/2 - 1 medium orange
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 star anise
  • 3-4 raw cinnamon sticks
  • 20 whole cloves
  • 1 tbsp nutmeg
  • 1 bottle red wine


  1. Squeeze the juice from the orange and set aside.  Zest the orange skin and add to the pot. 

  2. Mix the water and sugar and bring to a boil, stirring frequently until the sugar has dissolved.  

  3. Reduce heat and add the spices and orange juice, stir thoroughly, and then simmer for 1-2 minutes. 

  4. Reduce heat to low and add the wine.  Simmer it on very low, never allowing it to come to a full simmer or boil, for about 20-30 minutes.  

  5. Strain and serve, garnishing with a star anise, cinnamon stick, or orange wedge if desired.
