Coastal, Cottage, & Farmhouse Style Wall Treatment Ideas that aren’t Shiplap
Are you a Fixer Upper fan? Loving the shiplap? Shiplapping everything?
Well, today I’m taking part in a fun blog hop sharing all kinds of wall treatments that aren’t shiplap.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I love me some shiplap.
In fact, we have a shiplap feature wall in our boys’ bedroom. And we added shiplap to one of the walls in our basement family room makeover.
But shiplap is not the only way to create a cottage, coastal, or farmhouse feel in your home. And it is definitely not the only style of paneling out there.
In fact, there are all kinds of wall treatments to consider when picking the perfect one to suit your modern cottage, coastal, or farmhouse decor style.
Like wainscotting, board and batten, faux wallpaper, and even paint!
We’ve done a variety of different wall treatments throughout our house, in addition to shiplap, and I think the variety is what makes our decor interesting, don’t you?
If you are hopping over from Craftivity Designs or one of the other fabulous blogs participating in this fun hop, then welcome! My name is Krista and I called my blog The Happy Housie because I think of myself as a “housie” – sort of like a foodie, but for houses. I love all kinds of house-related decorating projects, DIY, crafts, and organizing and share this and more on my blog. You can read more about me here.
One thing about me; I love wall treatments. Paneling. Paint. Wallpaper. Stencils. All kinds… even shiplap. But today I’m sharing my favourite non-shiplap ideas.
In our entry hall and down our long hallway we added some DIY board and batten in 2/3 height. I recently also added faux map wallpaper to the top on one wall – I love the coastal edge it adds to our lakefront home.
We carried the 2/3 height board and batten into our kitchen and dining room as well. I think it’s a great backdrop for my favourite area for styling seasonal vignettes…
And it definitely provides a graphic punch to our row of thrift store collected art...
We also did 3/4 height board and batten in our ensuite. I love the contrast of the dramatic teal walls against the white paneling in there.
In our bedroom we did full height board and batten paneling behind our bed as an accent wall – this full height treatment is one of my faves.
In our main bathroom we chose a 2/3 height traditional tongue and groove wainscotting type of paneling, and I think it gives a more cottagey feel which leans to eclectic boho with the modern art and accessories I added during this recent room makeover.
But you don’t have to use paneling for a cottage-feel accent wall! Paint works too…
In the basement I added stripes to one alcove area to create a nautical cottagey feel.
We also created a greek key feature wall around our TV cabinet in the family room.
And in our boys bedroom we added stripes about 3/4 of the way up the wall all the way around the room.
And we turned their closet into a workspace and gave it a completely different feel with paint and a stencil.
See!
Tons of cottage-coastal-farmhouse friendly ideas for wall treatments without shiplapping your entire home! Which one is your favourite?

Thank you Kathy!!
I love it all, but those basements strips may be my favorite!
Thanks Melissa! They are definitely a fave of mine as well!!
We have both board and batten and a map wall in our home, so I’m definitely drawn to both of those — but I love the tree stencil in the closet, too!
Thank you Lora!! The stencil is such a fun addition to our boys room:)
I love your greek key design! One of my favorites!
Thanks Jenna- it’s still one of my faves too!

Hi Cassie! It wouldn’t be quite the same without the row of art, would it?!
