DIY Holiday Pallet Sign: Baby It’s Cold Outside {Blue Christmas}
To make this you need:
- pallet wood (or other wood boards would work as well)
- drill, screws and strapping to attach the pallet boards together
- primer and paint (colour of your choice- I used Benjamin Moore’s Colorado Gray)
- printed lettering and snowflakes
- pencil
- craft paint and angled paint brush
- sandpaper or sanding block
Start by creating a pallet sign board…
You can attach your pallet boards together at the back the same way that I shared in my Easy DIY Wood Sign tutorial…
I started with a coat of primer followed by a good thick coat of blue latex paint (Colorado Blue – the same color that is in our entry hall and seems to repeatedly reappear in various painted objects throughout the house)…
I printed out some lettering to use and then played around with the placement of them. Once the paint was dry I used the pencil/transfer paper technique to scribe the letters onto the pallet sign…
I also traced on some snowflake shapes that I had cut out from a template – you can find cute printable snowflake templates here.
I then filled in the lettering using white craft paint…. I thought I might use the paint pen as well but ended up sticking only with the paint and brush. I used an angled brush but also a regular fine tipped craft paint brush to fill in my lettering and snowflakes.
Give the lettering and snowflakes a few coats of white paint… and then let it dry. Lastly I sanded the whole piece down to smooth out the craft paint and remove any ridges as well as to distress and age the edges of the piece.
Done!
I am thrilled with how it turned out and can’t wait to see it hung on our living room gallery wall when we start “officially” decorating for Christmas next week. I’m kind of living in seasonal limbo right now… with a little bit of Christmas appearing but a whole lotta fall left -it is looking pretty mis-matched.
I have a few bloggy friends trying their hand at the whole Blue Christmas thing today as well- head over to their blogs to see what types of blue ornaments they have crafted up. I bet after you see all their creativity you just might be convinced about blue at Christmas.

Hey! I wanted to make this but do cursive writing. And usually i just use stencils and a sponge brush, but instead i was going to try using a computer and printing it and shading in the back .. would that work?
Hi Jenny, I think that that would work perfectly. Using the pencil transfer technique you should be able to transfer cursive writing and then paint over it using a brush. Good luck with your project!
This is adorable! I found this highlighted on this weeks diy Sunday Showcase. LOVE IT! I’m sure part of it is because I love that song and blue/white is one of my favorite holiday color combinations! You are definitely an inspiration and I can’t wait to look at more of your blog. Hope you connect too at curvesandacamera.com
Thank you Morgan!! I love that song and blue is definitely a part of all my seasons:) I will hop over to visit you as well!!
I saw a bunch of pallet boards laying beside a dumpster in a parking lot the other day when I stopped at the post office that is in a small shopping center. Hoping they are there when I come by next week, because I will load them into my car trunk. They are on the outside of the dumpster just thrown down on parking lot….no dumpster diving for me! Do you use some type of stencil to form your letters? What about the snowflakes? The colors are perfect for the theme of the signs.
Wow- hopefully you get your hands on some Betty, though my husband did report they were pretty tricky to take apart!! I used a method for tracing my letters onto the sign that involves using a pencil to turn computer printed lettering into transfer paper – I showed a few details on how to do it in this sign post as well as some more detail in THIS post here. I cut out little snowflakes and traced them onto the sign and then filled in with paint. I think I put a link to some printable snowflake templates on my sign post as well- at least I meant to, I better check!! Thanks so much for your kind comment!!
