Winter Blues Mantel with a DIY Pine Cone & Pom Pom Garland
Is it just me or is there something majorly refreshing about decorating after the holidays? Although I love all the Christmas decorations it feels good to get the house cleaned up and the décor scaled back somewhat for January. This year I was craving a calm coastal feel with lots of natural elements and texture thrown in for good measure… and this easy DIY Pine Cone and Pom Pom Garland was the perfect addition to our blue and white winter mantel.
To make this garland you need:
– pine cones (I collected mine from a nearby tree)
– jute twine
– white pom poms
– hot glue gun and glue
This was a quick and easy project. I decided what length I wanted my garland to be and cut the twine to length. I first glued the tips of the pine cones evenly spaced along the twine. Lastly I glued a small white pompom between each pine cone.
I love the rustic texture and warm colour that it added to our January mantel…
To keep with the coastal vibe I used these adorable blue lanterns that I picked up at IKEA last month … when I saw them I knew that IKEA had made them just for . They are almost the exact colour of blue we have splashed throughout the house and I didn’t even have to break out the spray paint. Wasn’t that nice of IKEA? They’re so great.
In the big glass hurricane (which I found at the Salvation Army for $2!) I used some faux snow and pine cones to keep with the wintery feel.
And once again the broken paddle that I found on our lake beach fits in perfectly… along with the vintage oil painting that I got while garage saleing last summer.
All the blue and white and cream works so well with the natural wood tones and pine cones and I love the calm feel of the whole thing. And to me, this is mantel scheme is seriously neutral.
How do you like to decorate after Christmas?
Are you usually ready for a clean slate and more subtle décor?

So beautiful, calm and serene, love colors you used, perfect for winter and summer. I love everything you do Krista, was so glad when I found your blog awhile back. Your style inspires me every time.
I’ve kept my snow people, pine cones and some of mini trees in ball jars out, have them in a long bread basket with an old wood window behind with cedar and pine garland around edges. Some of pine cones have been spray painted white for little difference in color and look. Happy days and Happy New Year.
Hi JaneEllen!! So thrilled you came by – I always love your comments – they are so personal and sincere. I am thrilled you found my blog too because I always find it interesting to hear what you have to share:) I love the idea of the winter scenes in the ball jars- I wanted to do something like that too but all my old Christmas village stuff was buried at the back of the Christmas closet and I couldn’t bare to make my husband pull EVERYTHING out again once we got it all put away. Wish I had thought more ahead!! I love the cedar and pine boughs and pine cones for winter- I don’t think it needs to be just for Christmas. In fact I have been thinking of going to get some more pine boughs to green things up in here for January (my Christmas ones had to go because they were too dry). I haven’t tried spray painting pine cones yet – I will have to do that one of these days. I bet they are really pretty- the whole display sounds lovely!! Happy New Year to you as well:)
I love the pinecone and pompom garland, pinning this to hopefully make it:)
Thank you – it was super quick and easy!! So thrilled you came by – thanks for your visit and comment – and the pin!
Pine cones and pompoms??? never thought those two could work together, but it looks like it does!!!!! This is perfect Krista!!!
Thank you Vel! I knew it was a little bit of a different combination but I think it turned out well… I like the mix of rustic with the white. So thrilled you came by!!
I’m getting out the epson salts for my snow and pine cones! Very charming mantle!
Thank you Pam! Epson salts would work perfectly! Thanks so much for your visit and comments!!
Ok krafty Krista! Love the sweet pine cone garland! I’m with you on getting the house clean and clutter free after the holidays. As much as I love decorating for Christmas, all that garland feels like it’s closing in on me by New Years! Your mantel is beautiful as always 🙂
Thank you Christy. I actually have gone super neutral throughout the living/dining room (well, ok, perhaps neutral for me is not exactly neutral for everyone else…) and I am loving the calm feel after all the busy décor of Christmas!! Thanks so much for coming by!
Aah! The garland is so adorable!!! And what a beautiful color scheme for your mantel. Looks so serene :).
Thank you Amy- the whole space is a lot calmer and more serene right now… I need to share a little more of it soon. Thanks for your visit and comments!!
how fun is that!!! LOVE IT
Thank you Christine!! So thrilled you popped by!
Very pretty! I packed up the pine cones the other day, but I might have to take them out again. I am still trying to put Christmas stuff away, but you are right, I do like decorating after the New Year too!
After Christmas is ‘down’ it all feels so bare… and while I am usually ready for a little bit of a scaled back look I still want to feel warm and cozy in January!
My mantle has stayed the same year round in the past. But this year I’m inspired to change it often. I think I will work on a Valentines theme next.
Hi Amanda! Valentines day could be fun! I was trying to decide if I was going to do anything Valentines’ish this year- not really my favourite holiday. But I may find some inspiration!
That’s really pretty! Love the art & the lanterns!
Thanks Anne! Gotta love IKEA:)
Those are the cutest, tiniest pinecones! The garland is a perfect addition to your winter themed mantel. It’s amazing how open and fresh the house looks after you clean up all the Christmas decorations, isn’t it?
My goal for the day is to post about my winter mantel. Instead of blue I’ve used red ~ my favorite color!
Stay warm,
Ashley
It is amazing what a difference it makes…like suddenly there is all this space that wasn’t there before! Always nice to use your favourite color on the mantel… I guess its a dead giveaway that I have a thing for blue. Still love red though too- especially paired with white. So crisp!
Looks great Krista! I too kept some pinecones around my home for a winter theme…it’s freezing here in my neck of the woods, hope the weather is better where you are!!
Hi Cheryl! It is a little cool the last couple of days but by that I mean it is 1 degree out. Not quite the same story as back east!! Stay warm:)
Hi Krista – I love the winter blues theme and your pinecone and pompom garland is adorable! By the time I get all of the Christmas stuff down, it’s practically Spring! One of these days, I’ll get it together and decorate the mantel more. Yours is just lovely! Pinning and thanks for sharing – have a happy & warm Tuesday!
Aw, thanks Cindy. We can only do so much!! Maybe my mantel love will wear off one day but for now it is my favourite thing to change up:) Thanks so much for your visit and the pin!!
