DIY Crackle Glaze Blue Pumpkins
Pumpkins can be any colour you want, so why not choose to make your own blue/grey faux crackle pumpkins!
Blue. Green. Aqua. Teal.
Not necessarily the colours that first come to mind when you are thinking about Fall decor items.
Instead we often think of blues and greens as more summery colours: they draw to mind skies, lakes, rivers, and oceans instead of leaves ablaze in colour and fields full of wheat or corn.
But every once in a while, nature sneaks a little blue and green in where and when you least expect it.
I’ve always loved those little blue and green toned pumpkins, but never been able to find them locally… so I always end up with orange.
And I do like the orange ones. I mean, they are classic, timeless. And fun mixed with cheery, bright Mums on the front porch.
But my heart craves the soft blues. The pretty greens. You know it does…
And since I never seem to be able to find the real ones, I thought that for this months Make it Fun Foam® Craft Team project, I would make my own coloured pumpkins.
And these DIY crackle glaze blue and green decorative pumpkins are the perfect accent for a fall tablescape… tying in all the blues and greens that I love to decorate with, no matter what the season is.
I’ll be sharing my full fall house tour tomorrow!
To make this I used:
FloraCraft® EPS Foam Pumpkins {available at JoAnn’s}
Martha Stewart Craft Paint in: Pool, Beach Glass, Summer Haze, Wedding Cake
Crackle Medium
Mod Podge Gloss Finish Sealer
Paint brush and bowl for paint/sealer/medium
These painted pumpkins are really easy to make.
I just painted two coats of the blue/green colours I used (Left to Right – Summer Haze, Pool, and Beach Glass).
After the paint was completely dry, I painted on a coat of crackle medium.
The longer you let it dry, the less cracking you will get. So based on that, you paint a coat of your final colour on the pumpkins while the crackle medium is still wet or damp.
If you’ve never used it before, experiment a little first. Once you get the hang of it, it’s really fun to use.
My final coat was Wedding Cake – a crisp but warm white.
After the paint was dry, I gave the pumpkins three coats of high gloss finish using Gloss Mod Podge.
I was trying to replicate the look of a shiny crackle glazed ceramic pumpkin.
Done!
Well, what do you think of blue and green pumpkins?
I love the way the colour peaks through and adds to the overall blue/green feel of our dining room but is still subtle with the white over top.
I can’t wait to show you the rest of this space, tomorrow!
Want to try this yourself? Here is what I used…
I love the crackle effect on these pumpkins. Thanks for sharing this tutorial on Merry Monday. Will be including this in a pumpkin roundup.
We need to be best friends, teals and aquas are my favorite colors too. I love how these look like ceramic. I’m going to share this in my upcoming fall craft round-up. Thanks for sharing at #HomeMattersParty
I’m a big fan of using non-traditional fall colors. The crackle effect on your pumpkins is so neat, and they do really look like ceramic! Thank you for linking up with our Merry Monday party this week.
Thank you so much Emily! I was really happy with the way the crackling came out. Thanks so much for hosting each week!!
I love the blue pumpkins. Not a color that imaged in a fall theme, but they turned out beautifully. We’re featuring fall themes on my Sunday’s Best linkup. I would love for you to share your post(s). We’re live! Starts every Saturday at 8:00 PM EST.
Thank you so much Rhonda!
I never think that blue will be a suitable color for pumpkins until I read your post. Blue even make them more unique! Great Frozen vibe! Thanks for such an inspiring post!
Thanks Jennifer!

Hi Karren! Thanks so much!! I’m not sure what is going on with my comment box or how to fix it – I will need to check with my theme designer I guess! eek! Tech stuff is not my speciality:)
