Our Coastal Style White Shaker Kitchen Makeover {the Reveal!!}
Come see my beautiful new coastal style white shaker kitchen!
Can you believe this day is finally here?
I’ve been promising to “reveal” our finished kitchen for sooooo loooong. And then that big renovation got in the way of my whole life.
And as I finally started pulling together this post, I realized that I posted my Kitchen BEFORE almost exactly ONE entire year ago… It was last September 16th. Isn’t that crazy?!? A YEAR!?
We were completely out of the kitchen for four good solid months. Like “cooking in a makeshift kitchen in the garage” kinda out.
And after that we renovated a second house. Then worked some more on the kitchen. Then renovated another house. And lived in it for most of the summer. And… then we finally moved back in to our real house…
So here we are. One crazy-ridiculous-never-to-be-repeated YEAR later.
Are you as excited as I am? Well, it might be weird if you were. Because I’m pretty excited.
But I hope you enjoy your view of our new coastal style white shaker kitchen…
Do you remember the before?!?
Here are a few quick images in case you’ve forgotten… or have never seen it.
It looked okay on the surface, though it wasn’t a great use of space. And once you looked just that little bit closer…
OH MY GOODNESS!
I had actually completely forgotten what it was like!
As you can see, we made some major changes to the layout that were structural and involved a contractor. We took out the sliding glass doors and added new doors in the dining room instead. Then we added three very large windows across the whole front wall of the kitchen to really capitalize on the view. This also allowed us to add a ton more counter space with a peninsula and eat-up breakfast bar. It also meant I had enough lower cupboards that I could ditch the uppers above the stove and go for a more streamlined look. I love the changes!
As you come in our front door, you look directly ahead through a very short hallway to our “new” kitchen…
My favourite part of the kitchen just might be all the amazing light and the view through the now-giant wall of windows. It’s way better in real life. My meagre photography skills just can’t capture the beauty of it.
I really, really, really debated back-and-forth about whether to go with a stainless farmhouse sink or white sink. I finally decided to add a little touch of modern to the space with the stainless steel farmhouse sink and restaurant style faucet that we ordered from build.com, and I am completely thrilled with my choice. I think it complements the modern feel of the bank of windows and is super practical and functional for everyday use. I can’t imagine the space now without that extra touch of metal.
The overall feel is so open and bright. It is honestly an absolute joy to cook and entertain in this space now…
The full height white subway tile is the perfect backdrop for my favourite DIY of the whole project: the DIY Range Hood Fan cover that I built with my Dad, for the Broan insert that we got from build.com. I absolutely love the way that adding the corbels from Osborne Wood Products gives it such presence on this feature wall. And of course, I love the coastal style sconces that flank it perfectly.
We also built a floating shelf to fit in this corner. I wanted to have some space to display pretty dishes and cups… and originally planned to put open shelving on the wall with the hood fan, but it just seemed like it was going to be too busy to add the open shelving there. I wanted that wall to feel calm and airy and open – and I’m glad we kept to the open shelf only in this little corner even though it highly limits the amount of dishware I can display.
I was so thrilled to finally find the perfect spot to display my Pfaltzgraff dishware – and, yes, we do use it! All the time.
Having a nice big French-door style refrigerator with an ice-maker is such a dream. And I am so thrilled that we spent that little bit extra to go with a “counter-depth” model. A few more inches would have made a big difference to the overall feel as the kitchen footprint is actually fairly narrow.
Oh… there are those windows again. I’d say they are the best investment that we made in the space. We could be preparing our meals on an old baby-change-table and the kitchen would still be my favourite place to be, with these windows.
The breakfast bar at the end of the peninsula is definitely the favourite space for my family to be. All my boys love to sit there for every casual meal; do homework there; or just hang out and chat my ear off while I cook. The planking and corbels on the peninsula took it from pretty builder-boring-basic to absolutely beautiful. I think I love the aqua planked peninsula even more than the white shaker cabinetry!
I am also thrilled that we went ahead and added some pendant lighting over the peninsula. I chose these beauties from build.com for their simple and classic vintage feeling design.
Well, what do you think? Was it worth the four weeks I spent camping while we rented our house out to save $$ for it? And the four months in the garage? Plus the several months more of finishing up the sink and faucet install, the tiling, lighting, hood fan, peninsula etc. etc.?!?
Did you find some inspiration?

Krista, Directed to your site while searching Pinterest. I am planning a house (on a lake) kitchen remodel and also plan to have windows on the lakeside, no cabinets. It is a galley kitchen currently and will remain that way. Hard to tell from the pictures, but what type of windows did you put in? Do they crank out? And are your shades the kind you can see through as well? Love the way your kitchen turned out. My counters will be dark, so I really want everything else to be light, light, light! Thanks.
Hi Katy!
How exciting – planning a new kitchen! We actually elected to do non-opening windows because I really wanted just large panes of glass We have a door that opens in the dining area that is directly beside the kitchen, so I didn’t feel like they needed to open. We also don’t have any shades at all on these windows, as they view directly out to the lake so we didn’t really need any for privacy. At some point we may install some solar shades but haven’t felt the need to yet. My in-laws also live on the lake and get much later direct sun, so they installed those see-through solar shades on their kitchen and living room and they like them. Hope that helps, and have fun with all your plans!
Hi Krista, I know this was originally posted a while back and I just found your website and really enjoyed your kitchen tour. It looks like you have a skylight in the kitchen. If you do, what I’m wondering is now that you’ve been in your kitchen for a while, do you find that you love it or not? Just wondering about the heat/glare when you are cooking. Thinking of adding a skylight to our kitchen renovation. Love your view– its breathtaking. Thanks!
Hi Stephanie, the skylights are original to the house. I do love them because it is often grey where we live during the winter – so all the extra light we can get is welcome! It can definitely get very bright and warm in the summer – but we have a long wall of windows that face south as well so a lot of the light comes from that too. I would have to say that I love the skylight, but if you live in a really sunny or hot climate, you might not love it as much (as this sun-deprived west coaster does!).
Thank you so much!
This is stunning! Absolutely great Job! Loved all the pops of color and of course…the view and windows make it a dream kitchen! : )
Hi,
Love the new kitchen.
Could you tell me the name of the grey floor tile?
Thanx in advance!
I’m stopping over from Kim’s party! This kitchen is a dream! So light and bright and all the DIY’s involved. I love it and pinned it for some kitchen updates we are making in the future! Enjoy your beautiful kitchen!
Thank you so much Doreen!! It’s probably my favourite room in the house – and definitely one I spend a ton of time in!
You have a million dollar view! Love the turquoise and that coffee maker in the corner. Enjoy it and it looks great!
Thank you so much Susan! I love that little coffee maker – it has a cute vintage feel:)
Wow, what a great kitchen with those views to enjoy! Sharing at Wow tonight.
Thank you so much Kim -and thanks again for the feature!
Love your kitchen, Krista!! So gorgeous… your cabinets are my favorite! We just ordered a new kitchen too and white kitchens catch my eye every single time! And I’m seriously convinced I would LOVE doing dishes if I had that view! 😉
Thank you Kendra!! It does help… being in the kitchen never feels like a burden because it has the best view in the house:)
This is absolutely gorgeous! I wish my kitchen had that kind of natural light, or anywhere in my house for that matter. Thank you for linking up on The Wednesday Round Up! Will be sharing on my Facebook page tomorrow!
Thank you so much Emily!! And thanks for hosting and for the share!
Love your style! How do I see the source guide where your items are from? When I click on the picture it doesn’t bring me to it…
Hello Lynn! I will look into that link – the source guide is here: Kitchen Sources
I absolutely LOVE your new kitchen! If I could redo mine, this is how I would want mine to look–the white cabinets, the color scheme, that range hood. You guys did an awesome job!
Thank you so much Sharon! I’m still happy with all of our choices, two years later:)
Absolutely gorgeous kitchen! I really like your coastal style, and all those aqua touches. Where did you get those dishes? So nice!
Hi Molly! The dishes are Pfaltzgraff – they are called Dolce. I love the colour of them and the quality:) Thanks for your kind comments!
Hi! I LOVE this!
I’m wondering where you keep all your glassware without the wall shelving, and how this is working for you? I’d love to ditch all the wall cabinets too!
Hi Elli! We have one upper cabinet beside our fridge that sits between our fridge cabinet and our open shelf. Did you see that image? That is where we keep all our mugs and glassware, and all our dishes and bowls etc. are in the big drawers. It seems to be working out well!!
Absolutely ADORE this!!! Just fabulous! <3
Thank you Chelsea!!
That is a beautiful kitchen! and that view! wow. Good job.
Thank you so much- I still appreciate it every day:)
I’m SO smitten! Those windows and that planked peninsula give me all the heart eyes!!! Such a gorgeous remodel! Pretty much my dream kitchen! Pinning!
Thank you so much Samantha!! We really love how it turned out:)
Hey Krista,
The kitchen looks amazing! I was wondering if you could tell me the name of the aqua color you painted the walls?
Thanks a bunch!!! Again… I love the room!!!!!
Lauren
Hello Lauren! Thanks for your kind words!! Our walls are painted in Benjamin Moore Whispering Spring – it is quite a soft blue in “real life”. I also love Ocean Air- we did that colour in our bedroom and it is a little lighter and a gorgeous aqua as well. Good luck with your project!
Krista, you are the only one who does coastal that works for me. I’ve mentioned it before, but I was never a fan of the style before I saw your home. Most examples I see are just too thematic for me.
Love your kitchen. It doesn’t hurt that you have the most amazing view through that bank of windows. Thanks so much for sharing your vision and fun approach to styling. Cheers, Ardith
Aw, Ardith! Thank you!! I’m not a big fan of overly overt coastal decor either – I just love small nods to the fact that our house in set on the water. And blue has always been my absolute favourite colour so I’m just glad it all works together:) Thanks for your visit and sweet comments!!
I am seriously dying over your kitchen. Like, seriously. Dying. OMG, it’s a dream. Lucky, luck you. I bet it was definitely worth the wait and all the hard work! ~Kerri
I am absolutely obsessed with this reno. Beautifully done! I wish I could afford to do all of this to my own kitchen. Thanks for the inspiration!
Glad you found some inspiration Erica! This kitchen was a long time coming and I am so thrilled with how it came out! Thanks for your visit:)

Aw, thanks so much Virginia!! I love your style so that means a lot:)
Im with you on this……those windows are amazing, the whole kitchen turned out beautiful and capitalizing on the view was the best decision ever!
Krista! This is STUNNING! I don’t even know where to start- from the cabinets, to the aqua accents, to your beautiful windows and VIEW! If I could redo our Lake House I know where I would come for inspiration, this is just incredible.
Simply stunning! I don’t even know where to start. Oh, wait, yes I do. That view! Those cabinets! The touches of blue! Everything! I’m having a severe case of kitchen envy!
🙂 Linda

Such a smart move installing the bank of windows and moving the patio door to the eating area. Wow, that is a million dollar view and must make the chore of cooking meals a pleasure. Love the airiness and the pops of teal. Stunning kitchen Krista!
What a BEAUTIFUL kitchen, Love everything about it. And your view, WOWSER… <3
Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous!! The view is spectacular, of course, but I love every choice made for this amazing space! I know you have to be thrilled to be back home, and just for the record, was an old baby changing table part of your garage makeshift kitchen lol? All your hard work was totally worth it! 🙂

Wow, it looks so good! Okay, not going to complain about being without a kitchen for a couple months. It’s so challenging, right? But worth it in the end (trying to focus on that)! Forces a person to be creative with meals and cleaning up!
