Little Turning Big Girl Bedroom Reveal

Little Turning Big Girl Bedroom Reveal at The Happy Housie square collage

You may know that we have been blessed with two little boys. And they are wonderful and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. But it means that I don’t get to do a whole lot of ‘girly’ decorating projects. Which is why I was pumped when my good friend basically handed the reigns over to me for decorating her little-turning-big girl’s bedroom space. With a lot of DIY we kept this project to a super tight budget and most importantly, the little-big girl in question couldn’t be more thrilled with her new girls bedroom space!

All week I have been sharing projects from this adorable Little-turning-Big Girl Bedroom that I did for my good friend’s daughter and today I can’t wait to share with you the final room reveal! In fact, I have been sharing projects from this space for months but never the whole thing…so if you see something that piques your interest, check the gallery at the bottom of this post for links to several step-by-step tutorials on projects you will see here.

The DIY Butterfly Lantern Light Fixture….and gallery wall. Her Mom and I crafted up about 97.5% of the items you see on that gallery wall. Well, her Mom provided me with tea, moral support, and conversation while I crafted them. And she did do a little crafting herself. Plus a whole lotta furniture painting. Like this bed… it used to be shiny glossy honey pine. They freshed that up with a few coats of bright white (over some heavy duty primer, of course).

I found the bedding at Costco! Yes, Costco! You just never know where you might find the perfect thing so always keep your eyes open. Then I mixed in some adorable Premier Prints fabrics in candy pink- by making some DIY one piece envelope pillows, of course. I shared my lamp revamp a long time ago… I found this old lamp for $2 at the Sally Ann, spray painted the base white, and then recovered a garage sale shade with some candy pink and white ikat-ish polka dot fabric.

I love the little gallery wall above her bed. I shared how I DIY’d those Dry-Brushed Button Flowers quite a while ago… and the other little canvases (aside from the pink and purple union Jack) were made by painting some little canvases and overlaying pretty decorative vinyl stickers from the dollar store. The little cut-out frames are from Michaels and we painted them… then ‘filled’ them with some paper pinwheels we made, a little painted wooden ‘n’ for her name, and a few punched out butterflies. I also made the Butterfly Art in the shadow boxes , and the ‘create’ and ‘dance’ were bought at Michaels.

Her Mom found the cute little canvas print above the dresser and the buckets at Home Sense (like Home Goods in the US)… and she used some DIY Chalk Paint to refresh a vintage dresser. We painted the handles in the same bright pink as the desk chair. I love how pretty yet modernized their vintage shape looks in a fresh, bright color contrasted against the white dresser.

I turned a basic boring bulletin board into a fun piece using some Premier Prints fabric in Candy Pink… We also made some tissue paper flowers to hang from the corner of her ceiling and some pinwheels to cascade up the wall. I attached them with little bits of double sided thick sticky tape type stuff. Her Mom repainted her secretary style desk in a bright purple and the chair in bright pink.

I love the pinwheels! They may be my favourite part of the room. I got my original inspiration from Kelly’s nursery…as soon as I saw that picture I knew I had to use them somewhere. I contemplated having a third child in hopes that it would be a girl that I could decorate for…but using the pinwheels for this little-turning-big girls bedroom was a much quicker and easier solution.

The walls are a very light lilac-purple which provides a nice soft background for all the brighter hits of color. Oh, and did you notice that nightstand?? I shared how I transformed that gal a while ago too…

  1. That’s so adorable! Love the colors you chose… it’s so serene and peaceful but also bright and happy!

  2. My wife and I have been looking for some new ideas for our baby girl’s room. I think she will like what you have done.

  3. Girls are fun, aren’t they? My daughter is expecting our first grandchild and she’s hoping for a girl because girls wear cuter clothes! Great job on the room, Crista.

  4. Sooooooo adorable! I, too, only have a son and would be totally BROKE if I had a girl. I always say the good Lord knew what He was doing when he gave me a boy! 🙂

  5. What an adorable room for a little turning big girl. I agree that the desk and pinwheel corner is my favourite, although it’s all fantastic. That’s one lucky kid.

  6. I am in love with all the amazing details in this space! I am right there with you as a boy mom myself, that I don’t ever get to have fun with a girly space. So my brother and his wife are expecting a girl in October and I was SO excited, but then she showed me her crib bedding…blue and tan paisley. What??!! NOOOOOOO! It is sweet, but she is just not into pink and purple. I won’t get to go crazy with all the girly possibilities. Oh well, I’ll save money, right? I love this space. The pinwheels are one of my favorite things. You really did a great job with it all. 🙂

  7. Are there any pics of the side of the room to the right of the window and bedside table? Room space looks similar to my son’s room and I am trying to figure out the furniture layout when we switch from toddler bed to twin bed.

    1. Hi Jill! I will take a look at my originals and see if I have one from that angle. You walk into the room and directly ahead is a short little wall (maybe 2-3 feet) so you kind of turn left to go “into” the main part of the room (the jog out is the closet from the bedroom next door which butts up to the closet in the little girl’s bedroom). The window is on the back wall that you are facing when you walk in, and the bed is against the wall to your left when you walk into the room. Beside the bed/bedside table is a little bit of space then the closet doors as the closet is on the right hand wall when you face the back window wall. (sorry, that is probably really confusing to read!) I will look now and if I can find a picture I will email it to you. I think a good rule of thumb when planning a bedroom layout is to try to make the bed the first thing that you see when you walk into the room as it should be the “focal” point in any bedroom.
