Fall Home Tour: 5 Simple Ways to Create a Cozy Fall Home

Today I’m sharing some simple updates and easy tips for creating a cozy fall home with limited time and a limited budget.

It’s here! Home tour week!  All week long, there will be all kinds of gorgeous fall inspiration and decor tips and ideas just in time for the onset of Autumn this coming weekend.  I’ve gathered 40 talented bloggers to share their Fall design and decor ideas with you.  Make sure to check out who else is sharing today at the bottom of this post!

If you’ve hopped over from one of the other tours this week, then welcome!  My name is Krista and I’ve been sharing my decorating, DIY, organizing, crafting, and recipe ideas on this blog for about seven years now.  You can read more about me and this blog here.

This is the first time I’ve shared a fall home tour in this house.  In ten days it will be a year since we signed the papers selling our previous home… and it’s been ten months since we moved into our new home.  (You can read about why we moved and chose this house here).

Needless to say it’s been a hectic year between packing, moving, painting, unpacking, then starting full scale renovations on our main bathroom, master bedroom and ensuite, and finally the kitchen and exterior of the house.  Eek!  So. Much. Work.

The drywall dust is (literally) finally settling and I’ll be sharing all kinds of details on those last two projects soon (you can read about our kitchen before and construction details here).  But for today, I’m super excited to be sharing our fall home tour along with my simple tips for adding a little cozy to your home this fall.  Let’s get started, shall we?

Five simple ways to add a cozy fall feel to your home

1. Use art or printables to create a colour scheme

I always love to use art or free printables to tie together and inspire my seasonal decor schemes.  This year I started things off with these neutral vintage farmhouse style botanical printables (I shared them in this post).

These led me to pull together a neutral mantel for fall full of warm natural tones and textures.  Which brings me to my second tip….

2. Add natural textures and wood tones

I added wood and twine pumpkins, cotton stems, and a DIY acorn and pinecone garland to the mantel; all of which were thrifty and affordable and play up that rustic/natural fall feel with the textures and warm colour tones.  The wheat flanking either side of the fireplace also adds texture and neutral warmth…

Baskets and bamboo roman blinds are staples in our decor all year round, but in the fall they add a feel of cozy warmth due to their natural rustic texture. Warm wood tones in the furniture continue along the same theme.

3. Pepper in fall feeling accessories and decor

You don’t need to go over the top with pumpkins, or use any at all, but I love my white and heirloom style blue pumpkins and pepper them throughout the living room to add a definite nod to fall.  I can’t wait until the real ones come out so I can get working on the fall front porch decor!

4. Create layers of warmth with rugs, pillows, and cozy throws

I kept my favourite blue pillows out from the summer and added back in the dark green velvet pillows along with a new gold pillow that I picked up at HomeSense.  The tasseled throw was a find from back in the summer but it’s chunky texture works beautifully for fall.  I “shopped the house” for the layered rug that you see on top of our chunky neutral woven rug.  It usually lives in my craft room/office but it’s going to spend the Autumn season up in our living room.

5. Cut and display fall leaves & florals

You really don’t have to break the bank on buying florals in the fall: pick or cut what is readily available and bring the outdoors in with vases full of fall leaves. The colours are hard to beat!  Use florals that are readily available and in season, such as hydrangeas and mums.
