Master Bedroom & Walk-in Closet Makeover Plans: ORC Week 1
Have you heard of the One Room Challenge before? It is a blogger challenge hosted twice a year by Linda from Calling it Home…. Bloggers try to makeover a room in their home over six short weeks!
And really, it’s four weeks, because the first week is where we share our plan and the last week is our reveal.
Well, it’s time for the ORC to begin again and I’m jumping in to tackle our Master Bedroom Walk-in Closet… and maybe even tweak our master bedroom a little as well if I can manage to fit it all in!
This fall will be my fourth One Room Challenge!
During the last three, I tackled these room makeovers…
This time around I want to tackle a space that’s been bugging me for years…
Our master bedroom walk-in closet!
These pictures are a little scary. Here is the current state of our closet. Eek!!
The problems:
- We need to purge again! Too much stuff…
- The wire shelves are not great for storage and the upper baskets are difficult to access
- The hanging space is inefficient and we hang a lot of clothing that would better suit being stored in drawers
- The hooks on the back wall are a drop zone
- The accessory and jewelry storage area is not working and is not a good use of space
The Plans:
- Select, order, and install a closet organizing system
- Paint the walls white and add a feature wall (wallpaper? stencil?) with a full length mirror
- Include storage for accessories and jewelry
- Add a pretty rug and some new and better lighting
Our Bedroom:
I’m also hoping to make a few little tweaks to our bedroom if we have time! I love some parts of our current design, but would like to change a few things and create a bright and airy Hampton-Chic style master bedroom (along the lines of our living room style that I shared here).
I last shared a tour of our master bedroom early in the summer and this is the “before” of this space:
What I love:
- Our board and batten wall
- I love the drama of our coral nightstands
- Our white chalk painted dresser
- Parts of our gallery wall
What I’d like to change:
- a new neutral upholstered headboard that works as a better backdrop for seasonal bedding choices
- larger nightstands that may even act as a small dresser {maybe a DIY project?}
- an overdyed style area rug
- replace the lighting with something a bit more dramatic and chic
This is going to be a busy week – I have a lot of research and planning to do to get all the key pieces selected and ordered. Next week I will be back with more details about my plans and my selections for this project. By then maybe I will have a better scope of how much I might feasibly accomplish for this round of the ORC. Wish me luck!

Cant wait to see the transformation.
You might consider the fuzzy hangers…..they take up much less space..(hehe, room for more cloths) .
An idea for jewelry storage, between the studs, lined with anti-tarnish cloth and mount a long mirror as a door over the opening. Now your jewelry is protected in more ways than one.Ü
I’ve never heard of them – but I’m not exactly a hanger expert. We were given the wood ones from a friend who moved; but you are right – they take up a lot of space! That is a great idea for jewelry storage!!
Target carries the Huggable Hangers (I purchase these when they are on sale. QVC carries a similar type(http://www.qvc.com/ClutterFree-Set-of-80-Space-Saving-Cascading-Hangers.product.V34544.html?sc=V34544-ISRC) I just bought a bunch from QVC because my daughter-in-laws LOVE this type of hanger and I am giving them more for Christmas.
Of if you go to garage sales, I find tons of them there. One sale I recently went to told to take all the hangers I wanted. I love them to hang old tablecloths on.
Check them out at target or watch the video on QVC.
You can post this or not…
