Living Room Makeover Reveal

You guys! It’s here! It’s finally our living room makeover reveal day!!

Frankly, I can’t quite believe that I made it.

I truly had my doubts during this round of the One Room Challenge. It’s my third time attempting this challenge and I think that this one was the hardest one to finish up in time.

I didn’t know if I would receive my online orders. Or if I would get all the painting done. Or if I would get my art up and the room staged. Or…or…or… how I was going to fit it all in while also working on the basement.

But somehow I made it!

The only thing I am missing from my original inspiration plan is the bamboo roman blinds that I ordered – and those will be here soon. {I will be back to share what the living room looks like again once we get those installed}.

And I am absolutely IN LUUUUUV with all the changes.

So enough chitter-chatter; here is how our living-room-tweaking-turned-bigger-then-expected-pretty-much-full-living-room-makeover turned out…

If you haven’t heard of the One Room Challenge before this post, then let me enlighten you. It is an incredible blogger challenge hosted twice a year by Linda from Calling it Home…. through which DIY and Home Decor bloggers attempt to makeover a room in their home in a six week timeline.

But, really, it’s four weeks, because the first week is where we share our plan and the last week is our reveal.

Have you seen my other posts for this round of the One Room Challenge?

In case you don’t quite remember how this room started out, here are a few “before” pictures.

Keep in mind, this wasn’t a bad space by any stretch of the imagination. I had recently added the navy blue and indigo to the space, and was loving that.

But I was ready to take it to the next level. We have had the same layout in this room since we moved in five years ago, and I wanted to switch it up.

Plus, the sectional sofa, that I had wanted for years and years, just didn’t feel “right” in this room. It felt like it took over and crowded the space.

And let’s be honest, I was just ready for a change. A few little tweaks…which of course snowballed into several major changes as the project went on.

And my inspiration for the changes…

Well, the big day is finally here! It’s time for the REVEAL!

Come on in!

One of the biggest changes was that we flipped the orientation of the room around. That wasn’t necessarily in my original plan, though I have always considering reorienting the room this way because down the road we would love to put a fireplace on that exterior wall. I am really liking the change and am glad that I decided to move furniture around one day when everyone else was out of the house…

Another fave is the new drapes I found at Homesense for a super fantastic price – they are a textured linen material in a wide indigo and white stripe, and I paid only $35 for each PAIR of 96″ long panels!!

I made the call, folks. The bookcases went white. It was a toss-up, but now that I see them in white, I don’t understand why it was a toss-up at all. They look. SO. MUCH. BETTER. in white. Another win!

The media cabinet makeover was one of the first projects I completed and shared for this challenge. This was an old hutch that we bought for $50 at a moving sale a few years ago and it was painted turquoise and lived in our basement for a long time. I’m really glad I made the switch and brought it upstairs- I love the lines of it. Plus, the old one looks fantastic in the basement- I can’t wait to show you that one day soon!

I found a couple of new little lamps at HomeSense that work perfectly with the white and natural colours in the room… and of course there are still pops of aqua, turquoise, and teal mixed with navy and indigo throughout.

I couldn’t help but throw in a little pink and coral too… this fabric from Tonic Living makes me so happy. Hibiscus are one of my favourite flowers.

Talk about a bright room with the newly painted Simply White walls, right?

I love them! Best decision of the whole project? Well, one of them… I’m pretty thrilled with all the decisions. But this was one I wasn’t sure I would get to, and I’m so glad I did. It only took a day with my HomeRight paint stick to take this room from light blue to Simply White (Benjamin Moore’s colour of the year), and I couldn’t be happier with the change.

Um, plus, I think we need to talk about these chairs.

I am seriously still making ga-ga eyes at them every time I look over at them. I ordered them from Wayfair.ca {I can’t tell you how excited I am that Wayfair is now in Canada – my husband, maybe not-so-excited as me?}. They are by House of Hampton and are called Greene Tufted Upholstered Club Chairs. I used my vintage cheese drum between them as a side table.

Okay, folks.

Here is the part where I get giddy.

Seriously, when I was unwrapping this sofa from Wayfair I was giggling to myself with excitement. I couldn’t help it. I LOVE it so much.

My co-workers even remarked that I looked refreshed the last couple of days and I think it’s because I’ve found new love.

My sofa. It’s the Josephine Sofa by Wayfair Custom Upholstery and I ordered it in Trixie Linen.

I could totally house-geek-out talking about this. So I won’t. But I will tell you that it beyond-checks-all-the-boxes. It’s gorgeous. It’s comfortable. It’s super amazing quality (definitely the nicest and best quality sofa we have ever owned). The upholstery is perfect. And it’s stunning. Oh, and did I mention that I think it’s really, really ,really pretty?

But don’t think that just because it’s really pretty, that it won’t get used.

Trust me, my boys had no qualms about diving right in. I’m glad it’s amazing quality so it will hold up to the likes of them…

So… what am I missing? Oh, ya!

How about that absolutely breathtaking gallery wall that we hung?

Ok, that gallery wall that I hung while my husband watched the ball game and occasionally glanced at me struggling with the tape measure and pencil and swearing under my breath. And then swearing not-so-under my breath. But I said I could do it myself. So I did.

And it looks amazing, right?

I ordered all of these stunning pieces from Minted and picked up inexpensive frames at Walmart and at Michaels on an amazing 45% off sale. I love it when I get great deals like that just when I need them. I’ll be back soon to share more about how to put together a gorgeous gallery wall from Minted, but until then, let’s just admire all the pretty….

The art pretty much makes the room, right?

Oh, and the pillows. How could I forget? Always such an important part of the equation.

I’m pretty darn proud to say that I already owned all the pillows in this makeover! Except for the two center indigo striped ones – I found those at Ikea, already made. Wow, right?!

  1. Wow! Your living room looks so beautiful. Thanks for sharing it with us. I also love to decorate my home with beautiful and unique things. Recently, I updated my living room. I placed a Himalayan salt lamp which is great. This lamp is so beautiful and gives off such a warm glow. It has enhanced all the decorations. I just love it.

      1. This is so inspiring as I begin decorating my new home! I was wondering, could you share the name of the light blue paint color on the “before” photos of the living room? Thanks so much!

      2. Hi Jenn! It is called Whispering Spring by Benjamin Moore -it’s a very pretty light robin’s egg grey blue. Thanks!

  2. This is absolutely beautiful!! The layout of my house is very similar and I have been desperate for some ideas on how to pull the space together. I am definitely inspired now 🙂

  3. I loved your living room before but I am really impressed with this new version. I painted my living space in Simply White as well. We have a sloped ceiling in the living room so it helped to make a small, narrow room look much taller and expansive. Having downsized from a large home with 9 ft ceilings, it helped to make our furniture look more proportional to the new space. I just love white walls now!

I also love your new curtains! Geez, what a deal! I’ll have to see if I can find something similar for my space.

    1. Hello!! Thank you so much:) I love the open airy feel of the white walls, too. With all the other colour we have in the room, it’s a nice balance. Kind of makes me want to keep painting the white everywhere… And the curtains were definitely my favourite budget friendly find!

    1. Thanks Erin! Even though it’s a little bit “fancier” it still definitely gets family usage! 🙂

    1. Thanks Jennifer!! I’m loving the changes to our gallery wall – such a crisp, clean look now:)

  4. Where did you get the basket on the floor by the chairs that is holding pillows? I’ve been looking for something just like that.

    1. Hi Rebecca! I actually picked it up at Michaels – I love their basket selection and if you use your coupon they can be a good deal!

  5. This really is beautiful Krista! I always love the pops of colour you put in every room! The bits of pink and coral are perfect 🙂

    1. Thank you Lindi! I don’t know if I am capable of leaving out the colour;) I love all white and neutral when I see other people do it in their homes, but don’t think I could do it myself! Maybe one day I’ll try!

  6. I’m ga-ga over those chairs and having some serious chair-envy! They look amazing in your space and I’m kicking myself for not ordering one for my bedroom when I first saw them on Wayfair! Love the Simply White paint your picked too.

    1. Thank you Melissa! I love the chairs so much – but your gorgeous wing back looks incredible in your bedroom! I was actually eyeing those wingback chairs up when I was figuring out what I wanted for this space;) Great minds…

  7. I absolutely love how this space came together! I love all the pops of color, but that gallery wall by far has got to be my favorite!!

    1. Thank you Krystle! I love the Minted art so much – I loved our old gallery wall too, but am so happy with the crisp clean look of this one as a change:)

    1. Thank you Tiffany – it definitely is… in fact, I feel the sofa beckoning me right now;)

    1. Thank you Kristi! Aren’t those chairs fabulous? I’m so happy I made the leap and ordered them. Our new sofa is definitely a fave – I can’t believe how comfy it is!

    1. Thank you so much Megan! I love all the different blues together as well, and I love curling up in one of the tufted chairs…

    1. Thank you Christine! I am so happy with the changes… it feels like I’m living in a whole new house!

    1. Thanks Jen! I generally do hang the art myself, but I was trying not to make a bunch of extra holes in the process (like I usually do… lol). I love my Minted gallery:)

    1. Thank you Roxanne!! I couldn’t be happier with how it came out. No matter how much white I add in, I can never seem to help having lots of colour!

    1. Hi Elise! The natural light in this house is one of the best things about it!! I thought it was a bright room but it’s crazy how much brighter painting it white made it! Thanks for your kind comments:)

  8. I just couldn’t imagine how you could’ve improved on your BEFORE Krista, just amazing, and now I see how! Perfect and relaxing living room even more so now! Congrats & CHEERS to us for another room done!

    1. Aw, thanks Vel! I am so thrilled to have made it through and couldn’t be happier with the result!! The challenge is hard while we are doing it, but so amazing to power through and transform your space in such a short time!

  9. Oh Krista! It’s absolutely STUNNING! It’s so bright, airy and beautiful! The fabrics and textiles are just gorgeous and that gallery wall really pops on the white walls!

“Somehow” we made it girl … and it was all worth it!

    1. Thank you Kristi!! I am loving the white walls… I think they need to extend elsewhere (lol – don’t tell my husband). But of course I needed to add colour!! This was so much less work then your amazing bathroom, but I’m glad I got it finished up none-the-less!

  10. Your living room is beautiful, Krista! Those chairs are gorgeous and the shelves look beautiful white! It all came together perfectly! xo

    1. Thank you so much Kendra! I can’t get over the chairs and sofa- I love them so much. They totally changed the feel of the room, as well as all that white paint!

  11. Krista! Your living room looks SO good! I am loving the gallery wall above your couch, and I LOVE the way you added the two bookcases to either side of your TV console. Your home looks absolutely gorgeous!

    1. Thanks April! I was having a serious hate-on for those bookshelves in the living room and was really doubting my wisdom in ordering them until I finally painted them – now I love them – all in white. Plus, I need space to display the ridiculous number of accessories I have;)

    1. Thanks Cassie! I totally feel that! Not quite so cottagey country anymore… a little more chic beach house? I hope? I was feeling the need to change it up. I think that with all the time we spend blogging, we see so many amazing rooms and start to change up our style over time.

  12. Love how bright and airy this space feels with the subtle pops of blue. The watercolor floral pillows on the chairs are to die for, along with the pom pom trim pillows! Great job! Your “everyday” living room pic looks like about how mine does! 😉

    1. Thank you Melissa!! I love that watercolour fabric too:) My boys definitely make short work of messing it all up, but it goes back together pretty quickly;) Plus, that’s what a living room is for, right?!
