Surf Style Beachy Bedroom Makeover Reveal

Today I’m sharing the before and after and REVEAL of Finn’s beachy surf style bedroom makeover as part of the Spring One Room Challenge.

It’s finally here! Reveal day! And I’m so over the moon about how Finn’s beachy surf style bedroom makeover turned out. I love it. He loves it. We all love it… and it’s totally “him”! But seriously, who doesn’t love a sunny beach Va-cay?! And when that’s what your bedroom feels like… well, it can’t get much better than that for an ocean and surf loving 7 year old.

If you’ve been following along the past few weeks, you may have seen some of my previous posts talking about this room makeover as part of the spring One Room Challenge. So far I’ve shared the “before” of his space along with plans, some surf style bedroom inspiration, a check-in on my limited first week’s progress, the huge wave wall mural that is featured behind his bed, as well his small reach-in closet makeover using an IKEA PAX organizer. Last week I shared the DIY for his surf/beach themed gallery wall, including some free printable beach photography; I also spilled all the goods on how I found the perfect nautical look lighting for this space.

Finn absolutely adores his new bedroom. He spends all kinds of time hanging out in there now; colouring at his desk while whistling away. He’s become quite a little whistler ever since he figured out how, and he’s always got some little melody blowing through his lips. I’m glad it’s become a space that he loves to spend time in and that we enjoy spending time in together. Every night when we’re reading his books before bed, I no longer shudder as I look around at the disorganized mess is once was. That’s a win, right?

Do you remember it before? It had leftovers from the days this room was my craft room still on the walls and windows. We’d gathered together a hodgepodge of furniture from around the house to serve his needs while we figured out what would work best in this space.

BEFORE

AND NOW…

That mural, right?

It’s from Photowall. You can read all about how I installed it here.

Do you remember the corner before? It was a pegboard gift wrap station in my old craft room – and that pegboard was covering a glass block wall that we were trying to disguise. You know, early 90’s vibe.

BEFORE

AND NOW…

Check out the shiplap!!

It’s called Metrie Complete Shiplap . I LOVE it. It was so quick to install – my Dad, hubs, and I did all of it in part of one day. I followed that up with a few more hours of touch up. But it’s completely ready to go! Pre-painted. No need to prime and then paint multiple coats. It comes like that.  Seriously. Right? I’ll be sharing a DIY tutorial in the months ahead, but for now you can learn more about it here.

And did you notice the cozy little reading corner that I squeezed into this space? All it took was a super comfy beanbag chair from Wayfair – and this indigo zigzag pattern fabric was spot on for this scheme.

I can’t get over the sweet little wooden X bookcase/nightstand that I found! It, combined with the gorgeous fisherman style nightlight lamp from Lamps Plus. I couldn’t be happier with how they work together.

We also switched out the hanging lantern style fixture on the ceiling with this beautiful ceiling flush mount fixture from Lamps Plus, also with an industrial/nautical feel to it.

That nightstand?

It’s an Ikea RAST hack that I did for the boys’ original shared bedroom space. I sanded it down slightly and gave it a couple of coats of semi-gloss varathane to give it a fresh, new look and help it blend well with the wooden x-bookshelf/nightstand on the other side of his bed.

You might not think a 7 year old will use a desk much, but he loves it. He is constantly drawing maps or pictures and colouring on his desk. I’m so glad he has a quite little spot he can retreat to and recharge from his active and busy days. It’s a simple Ikea Hemnes desk that I gave a custom look by adding agate stone handles. I can’t believe how amazingly that simple change elevated the whole look. Plus, Finn loves agate. He begged me to buy him the big blue agate stone on that sits on his big white bookcase.

There is the other of his fisherman style nightlight lamps! Isn’t it a great feature? And the drapes! They are called Gulf Gate striped blackout drapery panels and the wavy blue design ties in so well with the beach/surf theme of his room. When I ordered them I thought the background colour was a lot more white then it actually is – it’s definitely more of a grey. But because there are quite a few grey accents in his room, it worked just as well (though I love me a crisp blue and white combo!).

I LOVE the shark head. Finn LOVES the shark head. It’s all around a favourite accessory in this room. For whatever reason, Finn loves sharks. He was beyond thrilled when he finally got to sleep in his new shark sheets. Let’s hope that this is as close as he ever gets to a shark!

And, from the outside it may not look like much. It’s just a small closet…

Oooooooooh…the closet. Remember it?

BEFORE…

And AFTER…

I shared the details on how we turned this smalls pace into a crazy-efficient storage wonder – it’s what closet dreams are made of, peeps. I love me some PAX!

Remember this wall?

BEFORE…

And NOW…

I want to say “one of my favourite DIYs in this space” but I realize I’ve said that already so many times! So… another project I love in this room is his beachy gallery wall. It’s actually the only photo gallery wall we have in our house right now, and I’m wondering where I can put another one. Isn’t it fab?  I shared the tutorial and details (including how you can download your own free printable beach prints) here.

Oh, that F??

It’s one of the projects in my new book that is coming out June 5th!!

It’s available right now for pre-order on Amazon!

Finally… his bookcase! And reading corner. I really want to get some better pics of this because it’s a super cute little wall in his room. The lighting was so off… but here is how it {sort of} looks. But it’s so much cuter in real life…

Whew.

That was a lot of talk. And a lot of pictures. Are you even still with me? Well, if you are, maybe you’re looking for some sources? Here you go!

Still have a few finishing touches but had to put it on hold to be more available for all my daughter’s spring activities: prom, dance competitions and graduation. Mom needs a vacation! Your gallery wall turned out great, and I love the mural, but the whole room is amazingly!
